STORY WEAVER

Rahul Mishra grew up in a sleepy village 53 miles off Kanpur in Malhausi. He spent his childhood with his grandparents, listening to an array of stories- religious, historical, moral, of balance and humanity. Rahul's educational foundations were laid at a nearby government school, which lead him to a graduate degree in Physics from Kanpur University. A chance encounter with a design school saw him trail to the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad for a postgraduate degree, a turning point in Rahul's career. He found his true calling in an atmosphere that questioned his commitment to the world around him, realising the potential of Design as an instrument to relieve people of their quandaries.

Rahul's dissertation projects addressed various social issues, his encounters with numerous skilled artisans and craftsmen left them gratified and empowered. His debut collection, which was borne out of a project on Kerala handlooms, took him to Istituto Marangoni on a scholarship.




 



NEW IDIOMS

2008 saw the inception of the label Rahul Mishra in Mumbai. In its first collection, the brand had already established its identity with textiles and craft intervention, etching a new language in handmade couture.

"Let craft lead the way" was the crux from which the brand sought to sew its presence and create fashion that is relevant, and serves a greater cause. From this inspiration evolved the belief, that a tradition that has been practiced for generations and has upheld economies, can be molded into a chic, modern, urban wear line. The staunch belief in age-old crafts, and the ability to interpret them into a new language consequently saw collections that collaborated with craftsmen from various regions of India. Sustainable, ethical and slow fashion, are terms increasingly used to express Rahul's work, redefining notions in fashion.




 



NEW FRONTIERS

2014 catapulted Rahul Mishra onto the global stage, with the winning of the prestigious and coveted International Woolmark Prize. The show took place in Milan's La Triennale Museum, on the sidelines of Milan Fashion Week. His work won global applause and reverberated the year round from New York to Sydney, and Milan to Beijing. Buoyed by the success, Rahul Mishra made his international debut at Paris Fashion Week for his Spring Summer 2015 collection, and is now a regular on the calendar. Presently the label retails at the best fashion stores, and online portals around the world, as well as a select few boutiques across India. Rahul Mishra was featured in the 2014 edition of BoF 500 (Business of Fashion) amongst an incredible list of people shaping the global fashion industry.
